Japanese Field Study A Shodo experience(Wednesday,July 27)
On July 27 (Wed.), eight exchange students participated in a Japanese calligraphy experience as part of the class in Japanese Field Study A. In the pre-training, the students studied the history and basic knowledge of calligraphy. Then, they actually experienced Japanese culture through Shodo.
The following comments were made by the participating students in their post-program reports.
・I found that In Shuji, the purpose is to write beautiful yet precise characters while understanding each kana through each brush stroke. The beauty of Shodo is unique upon each individual, emphasizing on the calligrapher's artistry and creativity.
・It was very interesting to be able to write my own kanji names and favorite characters with a brush for the first time. Although I could not write neatly, I had a good time.
・This time the teacher made my kanji name for me and explained the meaning of the name, which I appreciated. I love my kanji name. It was really interesting and a great experience for me to choose my favorite character and write my name with that character. If I have a chance in the future, I would like to learn more calligraphy.
・Through this experience, I learned one of the beautiful things about the traditional Japanese arts. Individuals concentrate only on writing letters in a quiet space. By facing calligraphy with a calm mind, stress is released from daily life.
We will continue to offer classes so that international students can experience Japanese culture and feel familiar with it.
