Learning Support Activities for Children with Foreign Roots in Ami (Thursday,October 9)
The "Learning Support Activities for Children with Foreign Roots," previously conducted in the 2023 academic year, have been relaunched in Ami Town after a two-year hiatus. In recent years, the number of children with foreign roots living in Ami has been rapidly increasing. Responding to requests from local elementary school teachers, the program has resumed with renewed energy and purpose.
This year, the initiative is being carried out as part of the iOP activities, in collaboration with the Ami Town Board of Education and Asahi Elementary School. University students from Ibaraki University are engaging with children to co-create a supportive learning environment as a form of community contribution.
The first session, held on Thursday, October 9, brought together four Ibaraki University students and eight children with foreign roots living in Ami. The activity took place after school, beginning with homework support. The university students worked closely with each child, offering personalized assistance tailored to their individual pace and understanding.
Following the homework session, the group enjoyed language games designed to help the children become more familiar with Japanese vocabulary and expressions. Through play, the children were able to learn Japanese in a fun and engaging way. Their smiles and active participation were a highlight of the session, and it was clear that they were beginning to gain confidence in using Japanese.
One participating student shared, “Although the children speak Japanese quite well, they often struggle when it comes to academic tasks. I want to think more deeply about how we can support them effectively moving forward.” The session proved to be a valuable learning experience not only for the children but also for the university students.
This activity will continue every Thursday, with the aim of supporting the children’s ongoing learning. It is expected to become a meaningful space where university students and children can learn and grow together within the community.
