Kodo(Japanese incense ceremony) Experience(Friday, October 17)
On Friday, October 17, 2025, as part of the Japanese Field Studies B program, 22 international exchange students participated in a Kōdō (Japanese incense ceremony) experience.
After learning about the history and etiquette of Kōdō, the students took part in kumikō, an activity where participants appreciate and distinguish different incense fragrances. Guided by a Kōdō instructor, they had a unique opportunity to engage with Japanese traditional culture through their senses.
Students shared their impressions, saying, “I was fascinated by the depth of the world of incense,” “The calm atmosphere allowed me to reflect on myself,” and “It was my first time trying Kōdō, but I found it very relaxing.”
The experience offered students a chance to discover the Japanese aesthetic of appreciating subtle scents while enjoying a tranquil and mindful moment together.
