Ibaraki University International Students Participate in “Mai Ami Matsuri 2026”!
On Saturday, October 10, 2026, fifteen international students and two Japanese students from the Ami Campus of Ibaraki University participated in Mai Ami Matsuri 2026, one of the largest annual events in Ami Town, with the warm support of the Ami International Exchange Association. The festival provided a valuable opportunity for cultural exchange and community engagement, making it an unforgettable day for the students.
The day began with dance practice for the AMI MATSURI DANCE performance. The students enthusiastically learned Shin Ami Ondo, a traditional dance of Ami Town, as well as Matsuken Samba, a dance that has long been enjoyed by people of all generations. Upon arriving at the festival venue, they were welcomed by rows of food stalls and a lively atmosphere. Students enjoyed typical Japanese festival treats such as shaved ice and candy apples while interacting with local residents.
The highlight of the festival was the dance parade held on roads temporarily closed to traffic. Dressed in traditional happi coats, the students proudly demonstrated what they had practiced, performing with energy and enthusiasm. As the spirited calls of “Ooi!” and the familiar tune of “Olé, Olé, Matsuken Samba!” echoed through the streets, the students danced together with local residents. Their participation reflected not only an opportunity to experience Japanese culture firsthand but also their growing connection with the local community.
Many of the international students shared positive comments after the event, such as, “It was so much fun!”, “I was happy to experience Japanese culture directly,” and “The local people were so kind and welcoming.” Through this experience, the students strengthened their ties with the community and gained valuable memories that enriched their study-abroad experience in Japan.
By participating in Mai Ami Matsuri 2026, the students were able to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture, build friendships with local residents, and enjoy a meaningful cultural experience that will remain with them long after their time at Ibaraki University.
