Japanese Field Studies: Making Wagashi (Nerikiri) (Tuesday, October 6)
On Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at the Japanese Field Studies Program students of the Japanese Language Training Course welcomed Ms. Mari Uchiyama of nico nico time Wagashi Lesson and made wagashi, traditional Japanese sweets, called nerikiri.
On this occasion, the students made two types of nerikiri: chrysanthemums and apples. They learned how to color the chrysanthemum dough, shape the petals, and create the yellow-hued top of the apples.
Although it was their first time making nerikiri, the students succeeded in crafting beautiful chrysanthemums and delicious-looking apples, an experience that allowed them to discover the profound depth of wagashi.
